Your National Tax Number (NTN) is your identity with the Federal Board of Revenue. For individuals, the NTN is your CNIC number. For companies and AOPs, FBR issues a separate number. Without registration you cannot file a tax return, register for sales tax or open many types of business accounts.
Who needs an NTN?
- Salaried persons who want to file returns
- Sole proprietors and shop owners
- Freelancers and IT exporters
- Partnerships (AOPs) and companies
- Importers, exporters and government contractors
Documents required

How to register for NTN online
- Visit the IRIS portal and click 'Registration for Unregistered Person'.
- Enter your CNIC, name, mobile number and email address.
- Verify the codes sent by SMS and email.
- Log in and complete Form 181 with your personal and income details.
- If you have a business, add business details and attach the required documents.
- Submit the form. Individuals are usually registered quickly; business registrations may require verification.
Common problems during registration
The most common issues are SIMs not registered in the applicant's name, incorrect addresses and choosing the wrong business activity code. A wrong activity code can create trouble later with sales tax and withholding rules, so choose carefully or get help.
